Sophie and Trent’s sun room has undergone a significant transformation, from a space dominated by their three cats to a kids’ playroom, thanks to the arrival of their two boys, Seth and Teddy, aged three and one.
The couple had to make way for their children, and as Sophie explains, “We built them a cat run to make way for the boys.” This decision marked the beginning of a new era in their home, where the needs of their young children took priority.
Sophie aimed to create a space that is “maximalist colourful fun” without breaking the bank, showcasing her style on her Instagram and TikTok page, The Streets of Adelaide. Her goal was to prove that Adelaide isn’t boring, and that with a little creativity, anyone can create a unique and functional space.
She found inspiration in soft play tiles on eBay, which were more practical and affordable than the original plan of using peel-and-stick tiles. The soft play tiles not only added a pop of color to the room but also provided a safe and comfortable surface for the children to play on. Sophie also discovered a beautifully playful tree bookshelf at Costco, which became the centrepiece of the room.
The bookshelf adds to the space’s whimsical feel and holds a collection of children’s titles, including Sophie’s favourite book about Adelaide, “Night, night Adelaide”, which was found in a local op shop. The bookshelf is a sign to Sophie’s ability to find unique and affordable pieces that add character to the space.
Nearby, the boys’ favourite wooden toys from Forest Finds are on display, and the walls feature adorable animal stickers from Gorman, creating a space that tells a story. The toys and stickers not only add a personal touch to the room but also reflect the family’s personality and interests.
Sophie handled 90% of the installation herself, with her husband Trent finishing off the remaining tasks. Her DIY approach not only saved money but also allowed her to have complete control over the design and layout of the space. The result is a space where imagination runs wild and every corner tells a story.
The love and care that has gone into creating this space is especially notable, given the challenges the family is facing, as Trent is about to begin dialysis and faces uncertainty about his working future.
