Leisha and Greg’s luxury beachside apartment in Glenelg South, South Australia, is a stunning example of Art Deco renovation. The couple, inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel Tender Is the Night, set out to create an extraordinary space that captures the essence of the Jazz Age.
Initially intended as an investment property and a temporary residence during the Covid pandemic, the apartment became a labor of love for the couple. They fell in love with the original terrazzo staircase and Art Deco railings, and decided to embark on a year-long renovation to create a unique and beautiful space.
The Renovation Process
With the help of Airlie Lang, interior designer at Atelier Bond, the couple revamped every space in the apartment, adding a new kitchen and bathroom. The floor plan remained largely the same, with the only major change being the concealment of the laundry inside a high-gloss emerald green lacquered cabinet.

The attention to detail and meticulous curation of the space resulted in an irresistible allure. Leisha explains that every element was designed with intention, from luxurious finishes to custom-built storage solutions. The colour palette subtly reflects the apartment’s seaside location and Art Deco heritage, steering away from kitsch in favour of timeless design.
The couple’s decision to work with an interior designer proved to be a key aspect of the renovation process. Airlie Lang’s expertise and guidance helped them to make informed decisions and brought their vision to life. The collaboration between the couple and the designer resulted in a space that is not only beautiful but also functional and tailored to their needs.
Design Inspiration
The couple drew inspiration from their travels and time as expatriates in the Middle East, incorporating references to Egyptian Feluccas and the Egyptian Revival movement of the 1920s. The dining table, handcrafted by South Australian locals Agostino & Brown, and the striped bedheads inspired by Egyptian Feluccas, are just a few examples of the unique and thoughtful design elements.
Leisha notes that they always loved Art Deco but did not previously think they would own an Art Deco property. They love that they are contributing to the preservation of Adelaide’s amazing Art Deco heritage. They love that they were able to take the essence of the era and infuse it into a thoroughly contemporary design.

Award-Winning Design
The apartment’s transformation earned it the best apartment award at the 2024 HIA SA Awards. Leisha expresses her pride in the project, stating that it is a place of beauty, and where life feels less mundane. She loves how it feels completely put together.
The couple’s experience with the renovation also taught them valuable lessons about the importance of investing in great design, finding the right designer, and trusting their expertise. Leisha advises that one should not play it safe and if one loves colour, then they should go for it.
A Magical Experience
Leisha and Greg’s time in the apartment was nothing short of magical. They cherish memories of waking up in the sun-soaked space, wandering to the beach for a walk and a coffee, and relaxing in the beautiful apartment. Leisha recounts that their whole time there felt magical.

The couple’s love for the apartment is evident, and they are not willing to part with it easily. Leisha jokes that they have had guests already offer to buy it from them, but it would have to be an absolutely blow-your-socks-off offer for them to even consider parting with it.
It is clear that the apartment holds a special place in their hearts.
The apartment’s unique blend of old and new, vintage and modern, has created a truly special space that reflects the couple’s personalities and style. The attention to detail and commitment to quality have resulted in a space that is not only beautiful but also functional and comfortable.
